Sarah Frances Janavicius

BA

Sarah was born in Hitchin, became interested in art at an early age. Upon leaving secondary school, in 1979 she took up full time employment, with British Aerospace, as a trainee illustrator / graphic designer and studied ‘A’ level in Fine Art at a Stevenage College.

In 1981, Sarah immigrated to Sydney, Australia, where she worked as a freelance and contract technical artist. On returning to the UK in 1991, she resumed her study of art and graphic design and took a BTEC national diploma course in graphic design. Almost immediately after completing the course, she decided to take up teacher training - and in January 2002 completed both FAETC 7307 Stage 1 and Stage 2. In addition she worked on designing a series of four greetings cards - with one series totalling 31 individual watercolour ‘flower’ designs. Watercolour painting, of course, is always a priority.

Her paintings are influenced by her background experience as a graphic designer and through spending 10 years of her life living in, and exploring, Australia. She paints in various techniques, depending on her chosen subject matter: sometimes dry brush; but mainly wet on dry, creating little puddles and blobs of paint everywhere. Of course, these wet patches of watercolour must be allowed to dry before continuing painting. It is a slow technique - yet effective, as the painting begins to take form - and is likened to the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle.

As far as subject matter goes, Sarah is inspired mainly by the natural landscape and its creatures. Compositionally her work is stylized to suit the chosen subject matter. Also, she has been participating in numerous exhibitions, and has been in charge of all publicity graphic design for such events.

Sarah mainly paints in watercolours in bright, bold style of her own. She also paints in other water-based media such as acrylic and gouache. She has won highly commended prizes for her paintings on several occasions - including ‘Artists and Illustrators’ magazine annual garden painting competition, in both July 2002 and July 2003. She has also won first prize in the Sennelier 2003 national watercolour painting competition.

At the present time Sarah is teaching watercolour painting in the community, in adult education, and to special needs students. During the last three years the group has held eight exhibitions at venues in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Sarah also does a number of demonstrations and workshops including: colour mixing theory and practice; tonal values and the limited palette; design and production of your own greetings cards; and textural collage based on textures in the landscape.

On the 29th June 2015 Sarah Frances Janavicius was awarded a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the University of Northampton. As a result of this award she has decided to take up an unconditional offer of an MA in Fine Art.
