Cathy Carson

Cathy Carson is a cancer nurse and a counsellor based in Co Down in Northern Ireland where she lives with her husband. In her spare time, she is a writer and spoken-word performer, who enjoys reading, music and time with family and friends.

Cathy writes poetry, monologues and short stories and has been published in The Bramley Anthology of Flash Fiction (editions one and two) and also in Her Other Language anthology, which is a collection of stories and poems addressing the issue of domestic violence.

Cathy’s writing often seeks to give voice to that which goes unspoken in society, and her writing deals with issues such as loss, domestic violence, homelessness, dementia, post-natal depression and many others.

The journey from writing to performing happened by accident when Cathy noticed that being nervous during readings made her pages shake and the words difficult to read. She decided to try to learn her work and recite, rather than read, and found she really enjoyed the freedom to express herself in this way. Over the last two years she has developed as a spoken-word performer and now regularly performs at open-mic events, festivals, and has performed for local radio and television. Her work has also been used to educate trainee social workers about the issues she addresses in her writing.
